Celtic knot work designs are metaphors.  They were created in times when spiritual knowledge was transmitted in symbols and images.  The circle is an archetypal figure that symbolized the Self.  The over and under weave represented the Celtic belief that all the strands of many lifetimes are interrelated and that all paths will come together in a unified whole.
