The spiral is an archetypal symbol of eternal life.  At the center of this Celtic design are three comma-like whirls, a trinity that represents a basic concept of Celtic thought.  The whirls represent the Continuous Cycle of Life.: Birth, Death, and Rebirth.  From this original center, energy is spun off into other whirls of galaxies which, in turn, create the Stars of the Universe. and, ultimately, all life.
