In Celtic times a cross was a protective symbol against evil spirits. A cross made of wood was particularly potent, for the wood itself was a protection. The vertical axis represents the celestial world, and the horizontal axis represents the earthly world. A pattern of knots represents the continuity of life through its cycle of birth, death, rebirth.
