These altars have no religious intent, purpose, or association.  By dictionary definition, they are intended as focus points to help one achieve an esoteric knowledge of spiritual things.  If one is intent on seeking to Know, then staring at a rock, a tree, or the sky can certainly achieve that purpose.  However, artistic objects can also assist in the search for gnosis, while contributing to your home decor.
